FAQs of DVD Photo Slideshow

Questions about Transition effects:

Why there are no transition effects when playing on TV?

DVD Photo Slideshow professional version supports DVD, SVCD, VCD 2.0 still picture as the output format. Please select SVCD or DVD as the output disc format if you need the transition effects. If you select the Still picture as the output format, there will be no transition effects available. The High Resolution Still Picture format makes photos look great on TV (resolution is as high as 704x576). To support this kind of high quality image format on TV with DVD player, the layout of files on CD is not the same as that of the normal video CD which can be played like a movie on TV or computer. This is the reason why this output format does not support transition effects.

Can I customize transition effects for individual slide?

Yes. Double-click the photo you want customize, and click the following button to enter the pop-up window to customize

What if I just want to add a part of the music to my slideshow?

The current version does not support this feature. The current version takes the music file as a whole object and could not play part of the music on the slideshow. Please download the free version of Any Sound Recorder from and this program enables you edit the music files and save part of the music file as a new audio file.

Questions about the album theme

How can I apply album theme to my slideshow?

Album theme is a newly added function of the DVD Photo Slideshow. By using the theme feature, you can design your slideshow without too much complexity, because the theme can determine the overall appearance of your slideshow. We provide about 30 motion themes for selection. Some of them are about sports, some are about festival; some are very lovely, and some are very elegant. The window of Album Theme is as follows:

With these themes, you can fix the uniform appearance of your slideshow. You can enter the titles at the beginning, which will be displayed before the slideshow plays. To some extent, what the text you enter is a little bit like a prologue in a play.

You can set the size and the color of the text as well as the effect it will display in your slideshow. After finishing the setting, you can click preview to watch the effect. The same method can be used to set credits at the end, which can be used to thank somebody.

After you select this theme, all the photos in your slideshow will be displayed within the frame. Before you burn your slideshow to the DVD disc, you can preview it by clicking Album preview

Questions about DVD burning

Why the program hangs up during the burning procedures?

  1. Please make sure the ASPI driver is correctly setup. You may refer to support.html to help you install the ASPI driver.
  2. If your problem persists, please take another brand name of DVD-R or DVD-RW disc to have a try. Please select the output disc format as the SVCD or VCD 2.0 Still Picture if you want to burn normal CD-R or CD-RW disc.
  3. You may also try to create an image file with our software and then burn the image file with other DVD burning software such as Nero Burning Room to have a try. For example, after you create the image file on the Burn CD window, you may burn this image file ( .iso) using Nero Burning Room as the following steps.
-- In the main window of Nero Burning Room, click File->Burn Image. There will be a popup window where you can select the .iso image file created by DVD Photo Slideshow.
-- Select “Burn” and follow the steps to burn the DVD disc.

Why my VCD or DVD Player does not recongnize the burned CD or DVD disc?

The reason why some burned CD or DVD discs cannot be played on your DVD/VCD player is due to the "Read" ability of your DVD/VCD player.

  1. Please try to play your burned CD or DVD disc with this DVD player software on your computer. You may download the free DVD player software from the following links: (for WinXP, Win2K) (for Win98)

If the burned CD or DVD disc plays well, there is probably a compatibility problem with your current DVD player. Please try to play the burned CD or DVD disc on another DVD player. Since DVD-R disc is the best in terms of the compatibility ability for DVD players, please try to burn a DVD-R disc (not a DVD+R disc). If you do not have a DVD burner, please use another brand name of CD disc and select SVCD as the output disc format to have a try. Please also make sure your DVD player supports SVCD (Super Video CD) format CD disc.

  2. If you are burning DVD disc, please refer to the screenshot to change the DVD layout control model and burn another DVD disc to have a try. This option is to solve the ready compatibility issues for most DVD players.

  3. If your problem persists, please use another brand name DVD-R disc and select the lowest burn speed (not the max. speed) to have a try.

Why only a part of my slideshow can not be seen on the TV?

Essentially, all television sets cannot fully display the entire screen. On playback, the TV can crop up to 10% off all sides of the picture (especially at the corners). More realistically, most TV sets will crop about 5% on most sides. That is, if you place visual data on a MPEG still or clip on a VCD that is too close to the edges, there is a chance that it would be cropped. If you are playing the slideshow on LCD TV, please uncheck the Enable Cropping option to disable this TV Cropping.

Why the size of my photos is only the quarter of the screen on TV?

When the photo is only the quarter of the screen on TV, you must be seeing the disc menu. Every disc menu selects the first photo of your photo slideshow you’ve prepared in the first step. When you see the main disc menu, please remember to press the digital button ( 1, 2, 3,..) on your DVD player's remote control to play the corresponding slide shows.

Why the program does not recognize my CD or DVD writer?

Please make sure the ASPI driver is correctly setup. Please refer to support.html to help you install the ASPI driver and run the "ASPI Test" program.

VCD, DVD and Photo VCD

Video CD, or VCD, is a digital movie format. It's basically a primitive version of DVD. A Video CD is a kind of CD. It looks the same as a music CD or a CD-ROM, except that instead of music or software, it holds movies, using compressed MPEG-1 video. Its resolution is 352x240 (NTSC) or 352x288 (PAL), which is roughly comparable to VHS. VCD uses an MPEG-1 encoding standard to store the video and audio. A VCD can be played on almost all standalone DVD Players and on all computers with a DVD-ROM or CD-ROM drive with the help of a VCD decoder software. VCD 2.0 was introduced in 1995 and adds hi-resolution stills, fast-forward, and rewind functions to the original specifications; SuperVCD (SVCD) uses either high bit rate MPEG-1 or variable bit rate MPEG-2 for the use of CD-R drives instead of DVD drives. index

DVD once stood for digital video disc or digital versatile disc, but now it just stands for DVD -- the next generation of optical disc storage technology. DVD is essentially a bigger, faster CD that can hold cinema-like video, better-than-CD audio, and computer data.

Photo VCD is not a standard by itself, this term is used when a group of image files are placed on a VCD connected to TV and displayed in a format like a slideshow. There are two ways of doing this with VCD 2.0 technology: one is to import the pictures into a video editing program, adding optional music and transition effects as desired. The time between pictures is decided by the filmmaker, not the viewer. The result is output as a VCD or SVCD motion video file and authored like any motion video to VCD or SVCD. The resolution is limited to VCD 352x240 (NTSC), 352x288 (PAL) or SVCD 480x480 (NTSC), 480x576 (PA)L which may appear grainy or low resolution compared to the original pictures. Another way is to author a photo VCD 2.0 disc encoding each picture as a still MPEG at 704x480 (NTSC), 704x576 (PAL). This allows better resolution but (probably) lacks transition effects. The resulting collection of still MPEG images can be authored with a program that automates the whole process from images to disc.

MPEG , MPEG Picture Structure and SMPTE

The Moving Picture Experts Group (MPEG) develops standards for digital video and digital audio compression. It operates under the auspices of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). To use MPEG video files, you need a personal computer with sufficient processor speed, internal memory, and hard disk space to handle and play the typically large MPEG file (which has a file name suffix of .mpg). You also need an MPEG viewer or client software that plays MPEG files. You can download shareware or commercial MPEG players from a number of sites on the Web.

MPEG picture structure

A MPEG Picture consists of a field or a frame. It's identified in the bit stream by the picture header that specifies the picture structure and the picture coding type. There are three (3) types of MPEG picture as the following:
Intra picture ( I_picture) refers to a picture which has no reference to any other picture, but it can be used as a reference for other pictures.
Predicted picture (P_picture) refers to a picture which may have references from another frame and can be used as a reference for other pictures. Compared to the I_picture, the P_picture may be coded with a greater efficiency.
Bi-directional picture (B_picture ) refers to a picture which may have references from two different frames, but it cannot be used as a reference picture. This kind of picture may be coded with the greatest efficiency.

Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers (SMPTE) is a professional association for enhancing the profession and contributing to the technology of motion picture and television engineering. The SMPTE establishes standards, practices, and guidelines for the motion picture and television industry, including the audio that goes with the motion images. The SMPTE publishes the SMPTE Journal, a monthly. Membership is open to anyone who is interested. index
